Jumping or leaping is an ability that most humans and many animals share to some degree. It is the process of getting one’s body off the ground for a short time using only one’s own power, usually by propelling oneself upward via contraction and then forceful extension of the legs. One can jump up to reach something high, jump over a fence or ditch, or jump down, and one can jump while dancing and as a sport. Some animals, such as the kangaroo, use jumping, more commonly called hopping in this instance, as their primary form of locomotion.

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents’ half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side before it passes over the net.

The shuttlecock is a feathered projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently from the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Because shuttlecock flight is stubbornly affected by wind, competitive badminton is always played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.

Since 1992, badminton is an Olympic sport with five events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, in which each pair is a man and a woman. At high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness: players require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed, and precision. It is also a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racquet skills.

Indonesia`s Kuncoro beats Thailand`s Ponsana

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – Indonesian shuttler Sony Dwi Kuncoro, bronze medalist in the 2004 Athene Olympic Games, defeated Thailand`s Boonsak Ponsana 21-16, 21-16 at Badminton males` single match at Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, on Monday.

Kuncoro, the world`s fifth rank of men`s singles, will advance to the 16th round of the Badminton males` singles in the Beijing Olympics, according to the Beijing Olympiad`s official website.

Earlier on Monday, Indonesian shuttler Maria Kristin defeated sixth seed Tine Rasmussen from Denmark 18-21, 21-19, 21-14 in the women`s singles match of the Beijing Olympics 2008.

The victory has assured Kristin of a ticket to the Beijing Olympics` badminton quarter-finals, where she will meet her Indian rival Saina Nehwan.

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet (3 m) high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. As years go by, badminton extracurricular has been developing rapidly. Coaches were taken from qualified clubs and have such mountainous experience in coaching and competing that this badminton organization keeps improving in high pace. Junior High Extracurricular is held every Tuesday and Thursday with Mr. Heddy as the coach while the Senior High Extracurricular practices on Wednesday and Friday with Mr. Rian as the coach.
Indonesia’s success in many super series this year is ensued with our Canisian victories. This, in fact, can be seen in Canisius victories during past 3 years that have brought great pride, started from CC Cup 2005, Binus Cup 2006, Binus University Cup 2007, Theresia Cup 2008, and CC Cup 2008. Our College has achieved the highest and brought many titles. In CC Cup 2005, Canisius badminton emerged as the only savior of Canisius in sport events. Meanwhile, Canisius men’s single has claimed the only victorious High School in Binus University Cup recently which was participated from all Jabodetabek High School, all Jabodetabek University, and all Bandung University. It makes us very proud proving that our College has stood equally with and even higher than some universities in this badminton field.
One unfortunate thing is that many sport events hold in other schools so rarely include badminton event in their competition that in this past 3 years, we only took part in 5 events. Even though our College won every single competition we joined, the fact that our Canisian victory successor obtain only few chances to compete deserves disappointment.
Both officials and member of this curricular have been always striving to the best for upholding the glory and pride of our most beloved Canisius College. Hence, we hope that our future achievements and efforts could proceed smoothly as of our expectation.

Volleyball is an Olympic team sport in which two teams of 6 active players (5 normal players and one ‘libero’), are separated by a net that is usually four feet. Each team tries to score points against one another by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules.

The complete rules of volleyball are extensive, and points are awarded as follows: If the ball touches the ground outside the court area, the team which made contact with it last loses the point. If the ball touches the ground on team A’s side of the net, team B is awarded a point, and vice-versa. The ball must be hit over the net to get a point.The team who wins the point then serves. The first team to reach 25 points wins the set and the first team to win three sets wins the match. Teams can contact the ball only three times before the ball crosses the net, and consecutive contacts must be made by different players. The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or push (short contact) the ball with any part of the body.

Through time, volleyball has developed to involve common techniques of spiking, passing, blocking, and setting, as well as specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures. Because many plays are made above the top of the net, vertical jumping is an athletic skill emphasised in volleyball. Numerous variations of volleyball have developed for casual play, including the Olympic spin-off sport beach volleyball.

Football is the word given to a number of similar team sports, all of which involve (to varying degrees) kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, also known as “soccer” and most commonly just “football”. Surfing is a surface water sport in which the participant is carried along the face of a breaking wave, most commonly using a surfboard, although wave-riders may make use of kneeboards, body boards (aka boogie boards), kayaks, surf skis, and their own bodies. In tow-in surfing (most often, but not exclusively, associated with big wave surfing), a surfer is towed into the wave by a motorized water vehicle, such as a jetski, generally because standard paddling is often ineffective when trying to match a large wave’s higher speed.

Handball which is played indoors has two variants. One is field handball which was more common in the past. The other is beach handball. American handball is a completely different sport.

The game is quite fast and includes body contact as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. Contact is only allowed when the defensive player is completely in front of the offensive player, ie. between the offensive player and the goal. Any contact from the side or especially from behind is considered dangerous and is usually met with penalties. When a defender successfully stops an attacking player, the play is stopped and restarted by the attacking team from the spot of the infraction or on the nine meter line. Unlike in basketball where players are allowed to commit only 5 fouls in a game (6 in the NBA), handball players are allowed an unlimited number of “faults,” which are considered good defense and disruptive to the attacking team’s rhythm.

Goals are quite common in handball; usually both teams score at least 20 goals each, and it is not uncommon to have a match end 33-31. This was not true in the earliest history of the game, when the scores were more akin to that of ice hockey. But, as offensive play has improved, particularly the use of counterattacks (fast breaks) after a failed attack from the other team, goal scoring has increased.

Taekwondo’s popularity has resulted in the varied evolution of the martial art into several domains: as with many other arts, it combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation and philosophy. Taekwondo is also used by the South Korean military as part of its training.

Traditional taekwondo is typically not competition-oriented but stems from military roots with great emphasis on offense. Modern Taekwondo, on the other hand, tends to emphasize control and self-defense. Formally, there are two main styles of taekwondo. One comes from the Kukkiwon, the source of the sparring system shihap kyeorugi which is now an event at the summer Olympic Games and which is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), the other comes from the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF).

Although there are doctrinal and technical differences between the two main styles and among the various organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, employing the leg’s greater reach and power (compared to the arm). Taekwondo training generally includes a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes and may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks.
